On Saturday I woke up from Thedi and Mayan laughing in the living room, which is probably the best way to wake up. I got out of bed and they showered me with love (obviously) because it was my 23rd birthday! The boys were still asleep, so we jumped into Thedi's car and went down to the beach.
The water was freezing but it felt so good. After a quick dip we dried up in the morning sun at the empty beach. On our way home we stopped by the supermarket for fresh bread, fruit, nutella, eggs and everything else you need for a birthday breakfast.
We get back to the house and the boys are in the middle of making Bloody Mary's that we have to our brunch. Because what else should you do on your birthday if not getting tipsy at noon? We pass out on cushions in the grass and let the sun burn us for a few hours before stuffing our faces with this BEAUTIFUL cake. Mayan even got me edible glitter! How great is that?!
We have it sitting in a ring in the grass like school children, although we toss it back with some mimosas so...
I don't know how we do it but all of a sudden it's late afternoon. Not that it really matters since all we do is refill our drinks and move to the table.
And swing, of course. Why did we ever stop?
Mayan and I go out for a little walk down to the lake. It's breathtaking. On our way back we enter people's gardens too look closer on their flowers. Mayan tells me stories about how she as a kid was in school home in Cairo and there was a bomb threat, but all the kids got really excited because they got locked into the school. She laughs loud and constantly and I'm just thinking that if that would've happened to me as a 8 year old I would've shitted my pants and screamed for my mom. Hell, I'd do that now. But that's what I love about Mayan. Her fearlessness and infectious laugh.
When we get back from our walk the others are waiting for the grill to get hot so we can put on the burgers we've prepared.
And they taste amaaaazing. We all finish them in two seconds and wish we would've had another one.
But luckily enough we have more cake! We take it, as well as two bottles of wine, down to the lake. I was happy/drunk/excited as you can see.
A woman and her dog had our spot, but we chased them away and took over the tiny little dock.
On nights like these I wonder how we ever get by in the winters. How can you live life when it's anything else than bare feet, salty hair and friends on a dock fighting away mosquitos?
We're there for an hour or so, eating the cake smoking cigarettes drinking the wine.
Watching the sunset.
But mostly eating cake.
And when we leave it's this beautiful. At the house Ludde and the girls go to bed while I stay up with JJ and Jakob. We talk broken hearts and rebounds and how people constantly tries to keep up a facade on how great their lives are. We promise each other that we'll always have each other to bitch to and on that note I decide that my 23rd birthday is over. I go into the room where Mayan and Thedi are already sleeping in and climb up to the top bunk where I fall asleep without problems for the first time in weeks.
Couldn't have had imagined a better day to turn 23 on.
